Just the one "Custom" that I built.  (Thankfully with Gregs help)

I have 3 primary AR15s.  I have a couple more that are beaters.   I have come to decide that I really don't need more AR15s.  I just need more uppers.

One for each family member and then another one for each of them in case any of those fail.

Been thinking about my first and maybe a second.  Shot my sons 9mm Beretta rifle a while back and really enjoyed it so have been thinking about building or getting a 9mm AR (PSA has an upper & lower for about $600 for the pair).  For the second I want to build either a 300 Blackout or a 308.  Now if any of this sounds silly, it's because I'm just starting to learn even though I qualified with the M16 45 years ago.

I am a huge fan of 9mm ARs.  I have a few of them and learned the pitfalls of this odd duck.  Let me sum it up, pick what magazines you want to run and build it from there.  I went with the Colt (and now Rock River) pattern as I have Uzi mags out the wazoo.  Takes about 20 seconds to convert an Uzi mag to run in an AR and the mag still works in the Uzi so that's a win on this side.  There are at least 5 different 9mm patterns to chose from. I think Colt/Rock River Uzi mag is the most popular, followed by the Glock mag type.  Sten magazine ARs used to be more common, but the supply of dirt cheap Sten magazines has dried up so this is not as good as an option as it once was.  Most 9mm ARs are blow back and there are a few gas run ones but I have never seen those run well.  Building one piece at a time is the way to go as most kits come with a adapter block that is lacking.  Drop in blocks are much nicer.

After a bit more pondering I'm considering instead of a 9mm as a first AR for low(er) cost fun at the range and a 300 AAC or .308 as second AR for hunting to consolidate the two into a 7.68x39 AR to fulfill both functions.  Anyone on the forum built one of these beasts?

7.62x39.
Yup.  Don't use it much.  I just feel so dirty running commie ammo in an AR.

Hmm, lets see an AR for hunting...  Umm..  bolt gun in 30-06.
Sure you can hunt with an AR, I have just for giggles but in truth there are much better options.  Better as in more powerful, lighter, cheaper......

Ok if you only had to get one AR and it had to do it all including hunting, I would have to vote 300blk if you reload, 7.62 if you don't.    That 308 is AR10 and cost o'plenty even on the cheaper builds.

Yep, I already have a 30-06 Springfield.  Just thought an AR might be more suitable for hogs than a bolt action.
TRN - Looking forward to your next Build Party even if all I do is come, watch, listen and learn.

1 bought, 7 built, 5 remaining MUR-1A uppers and 5 YHM lowers to go. I just got my YHM silenced SBR legal a couple of months ago. I love shooting it and the .308 especially. Better'n sex at my age!
