Mil-Spec / 4140 Barrel
« on: March 15, 2016, 12:06:34 PM »
Can someone shed some light on this for me? I've read articles that suggest if a barrel isn't 4150, it's not mil-spec. But then I read this, from Stag Arms, on their M3 AR-15...

"Made to mil-spec standards - Barrel: 16", 4140 steel, chrome lined, government profile, manganese phosphate coated"

Is this a religious argument? Or is 4140 not considered mil-spec?

Thanks.

GENERALLY speaking, it's gotta be 4150 - plus fit within a number of other elements in its' composition.  Look up MIL-B-11595E - that's the spec used for milspec small arms.

I am not sure what grade is Mil-spec.  Just remember that is just a specification.  Some things that are not mil spec are better.  Personally I prefer stainless barrels.

True, LJ - and I should've mentioned that, as well.  "Milspec" is an often-overused term that can actually get you an inferior product for a given application.  Just remember - the government typically buys what's cheapest - and that usually comes with a cost all its' own.

Remember military equipment that is general issues is made by the lowest builder, that has to adhere to a minimum specification...

Ditto. Milspec is the minimum standard the military will accept.
